Cottage Grove, MN Police Department

Cottage Grove operates a police department, fire department, and ambulance service under a public safety concept. This means the three distinct service divisions of police, fire, and emergency medical services are merged into one operational and management team; the end result being a team of people meeting and exceeding the goals and mission of the public safety organization. This type of organizational structure provides the public with seamless coordinated services from all divisions. Inherent in such a system is superior service delivery to the community.

Cottage Grove is also unique in that they provide emergency medical services (E.M.S. - Paramedic Ambulance Service), utilizing police officer paramedics and fire fighter paramedics in a joint service. Currently 2/3 of the patrol division are paramedics as are two of the firefighters. Our paid on call firefighters also work hand in hand with the paramedics providing the much needed Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) component of our total EMS service. Our commitment to quality patient care is the cornerstone of our EMS service delivery.
SWAT
The Cottage Grove Police Department has been a member of a multi-jurisdictional team since 1985. The Washington County Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT) is made up of police officers from Cottage Grove, Woodbury, Stillwater, Forest Lake, Oak Park Heights, St. Paul Park, Bayport, Newport and the Washington County Sheriff's Office. The multi-jurisdictional SWAT Team currently has 32 tactical officers and 11 crisis negotiators that make up the team which serve the 210,714 residents of Washington County's 423 square miles. Cottage Grove has 6 officers assigned to the tactical team and 2 officers assigned to the crisis negotiation unit.
The team's primary mission is the safety and preservation of human life. The SWAT Team accomplishes that mission by recognizing that the presence of a highly trained, highly skilled police tactical unit substantially reduces the risk of injury or loss of life to citizens, police officers and suspects; and recognizing that a well managed "team" response to critical incidents usually results in successful resolution of critical incidents.
Mission Statement
Recognizing that the presence of a highly trained, highly skilled police tactical unit has been shown to substantially reduce the risk of injury or loss of life to citizens, police officers and suspects; and recognizing that a well managed "team" response to critical incident usually results in successful resolution of critical incidents, it is the intent of the Washington County Sheriff's Department, Cottage Grove and Woodbury Public Safety Departments, Stillwater, Bayport, St. Paul Park, Oak Park Heights, Newport and Forest Lake Police Departments to work together to provide a highly trained and skilled tactical team as a resource for those law enforcement agencies included in this multi-jurisdictional agreement who need assistance with critical incidents.
The SWAT Teams duties and responsibilities include resolving high risk situations such as hostage/barricaded suspects, building or field searches for armed or dangerous suspects, high risk warrant service and apprehensions, robbery site surveillance, violent crowd control incidents, providing or assisting with dignitary or witness protection and other special assignments based on a high level of threat.
